A Step-by-Step Guide for a Safe, Respectful Shipment
Planning an aerial ash scattering memorial is a beautiful way to honor a loved one—but if you’re mailing ashes to us for the ceremony, you might be wondering: What exactly should I include in the package?
This guide walks you through exactly what to send, how to package it safely, and a few important tips to make sure everything arrives securely and respectfully.
What to Include in Your Package
To ensure a smooth and respectful process, your package should contain the following:
✅ 1. Cremated Remains in a Secure Container
Please place the ashes in a durable, sealed plastic bag, inside a rigid container like a temporary urn or plastic screw-top jar. Avoid cardboard boxes or fabric bags—they can leak or break in transit.
If you’re unsure, we recommend a hard plastic or metal container with your name and return address clearly labeled.
✍️ Pro tip: If the funeral home is mailing it on your behalf, confirm they’re using a USPS-compliant Priority Mail Express box and proper labeling.
✅ 2. A Completed AshDive Submission Form
We’ll provide a short form after you book, requesting:
-
Full name of the deceased
-
Your contact info
-
Any ceremony preferences (pet/human, video, certificate name)
-
Return address for any containers
Print and include this form inside the package. If you don’t have access to a printer, just handwrite the details on paper.
✅ 3. Optional: Personal Note or Tribute
Many families include a short letter, photo, or message about their loved one. While not required, we treat these with the utmost respect and read every one before the memorial. It helps us connect with the person we’re honoring.
✅ 4. Return Postage (Optional)
If you'd like the scattering container or original urn returned to you, please include a pre-paid return label. Otherwise, we’ll cover return shipping by default.
How to Package It Safely
-
Double-bag the ashes inside the container to prevent leakage.
-
Use bubble wrap to cushion the container inside the box.
-
Place the container, submission form, and any notes inside a strong outer box.
-
Seal with heavy-duty packing tape.
How to Ship
All cremated remains must be shipped via USPS Priority Mail Express. This is the only legal method for sending ashes in the U.S.
-
Visit your local Post Office and ask for Cremated Remains Kit #4 (free box and label).
-
Clearly mark the box “Cremated Remains” on all sides.
-
Keep your tracking number in case you want to confirm delivery.
🚨 Do NOT use FedEx or UPS – they do not accept cremated remains and your package could be delayed or destroyed.
What NOT to Include
-
Valuables, jewelry, or irreplaceable items
-
Food or scented items (they may trigger inspection)
-
Breakable urns (glass, ceramic, etc.)
